Apple Acquires Paris AI Startup Datakalab

#Global

"Apple has stepped up its foray into artificial intelligence (AI) by acquiring Datakalab, a Paris-based AI tech startup. "

Apple has expanded its presence in artificial intelligence (AI) with the acquisition of Datakalab, a Paris-based AI tech startup. The acquisition, completed on Dec. 17, was disclosed in a filing with the European Commission and reported by French media. Datakalab, founded in 2016 by Xavier Fischer and Lucas Fischer, specializes in developing efficient AI algorithms optimized for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, aiming to reduce power consumption while maintaining accuracy.

This move aligns with Apple's broader strategy to integrate advanced AI features into its devices, potentially starting with the upcoming iOS 18. PYMNTS reported that Apple researchers have developed a new AI system called ReALM (Reference Resolution As Language Modeling), designed to improve how voice assistants interpret vague references and contextual hints. By simplifying the interpretation of screen-based visual cues into language modeling challenges using advanced large language models, ReALM aims to enhance AI-driven voice communication, which could have widespread applications across various industries. .

Moreover, Bloomberg reported on March 18 that Apple is in discussions with Google to incorporate Google's AI engine, particularly its Gemini AI models, into future iPhone software features. Apple is also exploring options with OpenAI to potentially integrate its AI model. These collaborations underscore Apple's commitment to advancing AI capabilities in its products, potentially paving the way for enhanced customer experiences and expanded functionalities in its ecosystem
