The identity card will be presented in digital form in Azerbaijan

#Local

It will not be mandatory to present the physical carrier of the ID card

Public and private institutions in Azerbaijan will no longer require the physical presentation of an identity card when accessing services. Instead, citizens can now use the "mygov" application to share the necessary identity information, which will be considered equivalent to presenting a physical identity card. This new process, announced by the Innovation and Digital Development Agency, allows citizens to share their digital identity card information through various methods within the "mygov" app. Additionally, citizens can view the history of when, where, and to which institution their identity information has been presented.

The transition to using digital identity cards via "mygov" offers several advantages for institutions. It simplifies and speeds up operations, reduces the need for physical identity cards, and minimizes paper usage. The Innovation and Digital Development Agency is encouraging more institutions to integrate this process into their services. Besides identity cards, digital versions of marriage, birth, and death certificates presented through "mygov" will also have the same legal validity as their physical counterparts.

On July 16, the President of Azerbaijan signed a decree implementing the amendments to several laws, including the Family Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Law on Identity Cards of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Law on Information, Informatization, and Protection of Information, and the Law on Personal Data. These amendments, outlined in the law number 1193-VIQD dated June 28, 2024, further facilitate the use of digital documents. The decree also includes changes to the 1998 decree on the application of the Law on Information, Informatization, and Protection of Information, enhancing the legal framework for digital identity verification and information sharing in Azerbaijan.
