In Baku, a meeting took place between Rashad Nabiyev, the Minister of Digital Development and Transport, and Rebecca Slik Hunter, the Director of Global Licenses and New Markets for the Starlink satellite system. According to the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, the discussions focused on the implementation of Starlink's broadband satellite internet service in Azerbaijan.
Rashad Nabiyev emphasized that the discussions primarily revolved around expanding high-speed, low-latency internet services to remote areas and transit routes where traditional services are currently limited. It's worth noting that on May 9, 2023, a reseller agreement was signed between Azerbaijan's Space Agency, Azercosmos, and SpaceX's Starlink company. This agreement allows Azercosmos to offer Starlink satellite internet services across the entire country. During the meeting, the parties discussed the technical and legal aspects of using the Starlink satellite internet network in Azerbaijan. Additionally, Rebecca Slik Hunter informed the Minister about some significant steps expected to be taken towards the global expansion of Starlink services and the introduction of this technology to Azerbaijan. It is anticipated that Starlink will provide internet speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 500 Mbps in Azerbaijan, which is comparable to the download speeds observed in other regions, typically ranging from 25 Mbps to 100 Mbps.
On the pricing side, it is expected that the service will be offered in various versions and price points. Basic packages for standard bandwidth access are expected to start at $90 per month, with prices going up to $5000 per month for higher speed tiers. Initially, Starlink services were expected to be available to Azerbaijani citizens in the fourth quarter of 2023. However, this timeline has been extended to 2024, and further delays in the service rollout are anticipated.
